ADELANTE 2 at the 20th session of UNOSSC

On June 1, within the framework of the 20th session of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), Jolita Butkeviciene (Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Relations with all Overseas Countries and Territories of DG INTPA) presented the ADELANTE 2 Programme as the keynote speaker at the side event 'The United Nations and the expansion of South-South and Triangular Cooperation to achieve the SDGs,’ hosted by the Permanent Mission of Lithuania to the United Nations.

The event, which was also attended by Tijjani Muhammad-Bande (Ambassador of Nigeria to the United Nations) and Alicia Bárcena (Executive Secretary of ECLAC), as well as representatives from various multilateral agencies, was designed to discuss how the United Nations system can, in a more systematic and consistent way, leverage and expand South-South and Triangular Cooperation at the different levels in order to support Member States in achieving the SDGs.

The discussion also highlighted the importance of governments as partners in mobilising South-South and Triangular Cooperation by promoting and sharing local solutions. In this regard, it was discussed how the United Nations system could engage and involve governments to establish national platforms in order to document and share these key solutions, which could be scaled up or replicated in other countries. In this regard, Jolita Butkeviciene ended by emphasising that ‘The European Union recognizes the unique and special value of the exchange of experiences and knowledge between developing countries. But we also believe that evolving towards horizontal multi-partner schemes provides added value to the equation beyond the traditional funding’.
